R.E.M. may have called it quits earlier this week, but fans can still expect one more release from the band. Sort of. The group will offer up a new career-spanning greatest hits compilation on November 14 via Warner Bros.
Which basically means that this breakup has been in the works for a while since the bands record label is already preparing with a box set to console you. The collection will be titled Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982-2011. The release will contain tracks from the groups 31-year career plus several new songs that werent finished until after the completion of their last album, Collapse Into Now. Further details on the collection, presumably including a tracklisting, will be announced on Monday.
R.E.M. announced their split on Wednesday. The band wrote a terse statement on their official website to reveal the news. As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band, they wrote. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all that we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.
. Each band member also offered their own perspective on what appears to be an amicable demise. A wise man once said the skill in attending a party is knowing when its time to leave, wrote frontman Michael Stipe. We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now were going to walk away from it. I hope our fans realize this wasnt an easy decision; but all things must end; and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way. We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years, our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. Its been amazing.
